Routers have been how companies connected sites to each other and the internet. Enterprises and the providers that service them are now employing software for routing, WAN optimization, firewall, and LAN functions, typically in a chain of virtual network functions (VNF) or containerized cloud-native network funtions (CNF) and managed via the cloud using SD-WAN software.
